Art & Craftsmanship

At Phāea Creta Malia, we immerse our guests in a world where art and craftsmanship are central to the experience. We’ve teamed up with Greece’s finest artisans and designers, merging luxurious textures with locally crafted elements. Every item tells its own story, from celebrated ceramicists and marble workshops to the exquisite handwoven fabrics.
The Kretsis Brothers
Dimitris, Charalabos, and Thanasis Kretsis, self-taught artists, have been creating wall paintings since the late 1980s. With techniques inspired by ancient art traditions—from Paleolithic caves to Minoan Crete and beyond—they continue to transform spaces with their unique approach. At Phāea Cretan Malia, their wall paintings, including trompe l'oeil and decorative finishes, add depth and warmth to the hotel’s ambiance, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary expression.
“Womanhood Threads and Traces” exhibition
At the 'Womanhood Threads and Traces' exhibition at Phāea Cretan Malia, visitors can explore exquisite hand-woven textiles from the island’s rich heritage. A tribute to the late Agapi Sbokou (1914-2007), the hotel owner's grandmother, these textiles reflect her dedication to preserving tradition and her exceptional weaving talent, embodying the essence of Cretan craftsmanship and womanhood.

Crete Ceramics
The timeless art of pottery in Crete, deeply rooted in the village of Thrapsano, continues to flourish today. Once home to over 150 workshops, Thrapsano's pottery has been integral to the local economy, with artisans crafting their pieces using clay sourced from the land surrounding them. The handmade ceramics displayed throughout Phāea Cretan Malia reflect this age-old tradition, embodying a deep connection to nature. Each unique piece, whether decorative or functional, serves as a reminder of Crete’s rich heritage, bringing authenticity and warmth to the hotel’s spaces.

Our curated library offers guests a thoughtfully selected collection of books dedicated to art, design, history, archaeology, and more. Andria Mitsakos
At MEZZE at Phāea Cretan Malia, the authentic flavors of Greece are beautifully complemented by the artistry of Anthologist. Elevating the traditional dining ambiance, hand-thrown vases and vessels feature a commissioned motif by Anthologist’s founder Andria Mitsakos, blending poetry, simplicity, and a primitive aesthetic. Each piece is carefully crafted by hand, adding a unique touch to the experience. Completing the scene, signature brass salt and pepper grinders, handmade in Northern Greece, bring a distinctive charm to every table, enhancing the culinary journey with both flavor and artistry.
